The Essence of Germany

Ellie: “Rothenberg was such a fun town! It was so picturesque, what with all the cobblestone pathways, shops, the wall around the town, and the architecture. We explored some guard towers and found lots of beautimous gardens and vegetation. I also thought the weapons store was way cool!”

We found many fabulous stores in Rothenburg.  Namely Die Waffenkammer, which was a weapons store.  It had historic weapons in every flavor!  The girls practicing their “ball and chain skills,”  that will come in handy someday…  John holding a Maschinenpistole 38, which is a German submachine gun used during WWII.  William with a mace, a heavy metal tipped club, used for bludgeoning.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the country’s best-preserved medieval walled town.  The wall completely surrounds the city, and is a joy to walk along.

John: “Rothenburg was so much fun. It was an epicenter of the 30 Year’s War, a religious struggle that convulsed Europe in the early 17th century. I didn’t know much about that, so it was really fun to learn about! Plus, it had awesome scenery and a replica of A GERMAN WORLD WAR II SUBMACHINE GUN!!! Goodbye!

  1. I sure love the photos. It is fun to see you all on those cobblestone streets that I walked over 20 years ago. I'm glad that you decided to ship the daggers home. After our attempt to bring lemon curd back to the States last year, I can only imagine the looks on the TSA people's faces, had you tried to bring back historic weapons. Keep up the great blogging!
